Google -- Getting Listed

by Jared Whitworth

One good way to get your site indexed quickly by Google is through links from websites that are themselves crawled regularly. Perhaps the quickest and the most successful way is to take advantage of online directories. Google scrutinizes top level directories regularly, so when any site receives links from these, it gets noticed more quickly.

There are free directories and there are paid subscription directories. You pay your money and you take your choice. (Search “free directories” then “paid directories.”) Business directories, which also have interest areas that may be similar to yours are good since Google is always keen to find links between sites. Your site must be completely relevant to the business directory as both of you work in the same area.

For tapping the potential of high ranking with Google, getting enlisted in DMOZ, an Open Directory, is most vital. However, this is not the quickest way to get Google to look at your website. In fact it can take weeks, even months to get listed in DMOZ. The reason for this is that every site is checked by a category editor personally, and your site could be down below in the queue. Critical advice: before submitting your site to DMOZ, remember to read their guidelines and strictly comply with every instruction provided.

Another proven way to get noticed by Google is to submit articles to sites which take articles. Most of the reputed article submission sites permit you to insert a box called About the Author or Author Resource. It is at this place that every owners leave links to their sites.

Another benefit of writing articles is that when they are good, other sites find it relevant to use them on their sites. It is to be understood though that they must carry the Author details section at all times and this gives you a free link to your site. This is one way to ensure Google notices your site. If the articles are relevant to your business, you can expect the flow of traffic to increase.

So, in summary, you can try submitting directly to Google but I think that either directories or writing articles will work as well as if not better than submission for getting you noticed. If your site is not already listed by Google, you may as well submit it, along with employing these other techniques. When you search Google submit, you can find the page where sites are submitted.
